Former Spain star believes Barcelona would be a better fit for Haaland than Real Madrid amid Man City turmoil

This could come with hefty penalties, and even though Man City will most definitely appeal, the future of existing stars has now come under the scanner.

Clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid are already closely monitoring the situation, particularly when it comes to the future of their biggest star, Erling Haaland.

Haaland’s future under scanner

According to former footballer Gaizka Mendieta, Haaland would be a better fit at Barcelona than at Real Madrid, should he ever become available.

The Norwegian recently renewed his contract at City, and that deal contains no exit clause even in the event that the club were to be relegated as part of any punishment. Nonetheless, speculation over his future has already begun to swirl.

“The future of Erling Haaland is getting interesting. We will see how things unfold at Manchester City,” Mendieta said (h/t SPORT).

The former Spain international, who spent a season on loan at Barcelona in 2002/03, believes Haaland’s desire to keep winning could ultimately shape his decision.

“Players like Haaland want to win trophies. I agree that if you leave, which could happen, the price will be very high, certainly no less than a hundred million. That’s how it is,” he added.

Mendieta was clear in his view that Barcelona’s style would suit Haaland more than Real Madrid’s.

“As for where I see him, I could imagine him both at Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, I feel that Barcelona’s style would be better for him, and perhaps also for the club,” the former Blaugrana player explained.

It is an interesting perspective, though the reality of such a move would be complicated for Barcelona given their well-documented financial constraints.

A fee of at least €100 million, coupled with Haaland’s wages, would represent a significant undertaking for the Catalans.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, appear to have little room for the Norwegian in their attack, with Kylian Mbappe leading the line, Vinicius Jr recently renewed and Yan Diomande having arrived for €125 million this summer.

For now, the entire situation hinges on the punishment City ultimately receive, which could take months or even years to resolve given the expected appeal.
