U.S. President Donald Trump may not like us very much, but Americans don’t share his mean estimation of Canadians, according to a new Angus-Reid poll.
Visit truewildgame.com for more information.
Despite Trump’s ongoing gripes and grumbles about how unfairly Canadians treat the U.S., Americans have an overwhelmingly positive view of Canadians, with 39% saying they have a very favourable view, 40% have a favourable view and only 7% have an unfavourable view.
But that sentiment doesn’t go the other way quite as much, and Trump might have something to do with it. 45% of Canadians view the American in a positive way, but 48% have an unfavourable view. Canadians are pretty united on their attitude towards Trump, with 79% unfavourably viewing him.
Canadians have really soured on Trump since the beginning of his second term as president. In 2023, before he took office again, Canadians believed the government ought to approach the U.S. as a valued partner and ally (48%). Very few Canadians viewed the U.S. as a threat (6%).
That’s changed now. Canadians have an “approach with caution” attitude towards the U.S. (29%), with some suspecting a potential threat (36%) or even an enemy (6%).
It’s not hard to see why Canadians feel this way. Between trade tariffs , the threat of new ones , the 51st state rhetoric , saying the U.S. doesn’t need Canada and we can’t survive without them , the Gordie Howe Bridge shakedown — it would appear the president likes to give Canadians a good kicking whenever he can.
But that doesn’t change the goodwill Americans have for us. 78% say the U.S. should approach Canada as a friend or an ally, and not as an adversary. They don’t like the tariffs on us, either: 59% oppose Trump’s tariffs on Canada, while only 24% support them.
Of course, that also depends on where your political loyalties lie: seven in 10 MAGA Republicans back the tariffs, while 40% of non-MAGA Republicans don’t. Democrats overwhelmingly oppose tariffs on Canada, at 90% against.
