The New York Mets have plenty to dissect heading into an offseason that has already begun with more questions than answers.

Among the more unusual developments that raises bigger questions about the organization has been the sudden turnaround of Freddy Peralta, who went from struggling with the Mets during a disappointing season to becoming an important part of the Tampa Bay Rays’ playoff plans after being traded at the deadline.

“With three straight strong starts, trade deadline acquisition Freddy Peralta is starting to look like another success story for the Tampa Bay Rays,” The Athletic’s Eno Sarris wrote, detailing how Tampa Bay helped Peralta make adjustments after acquiring him, adding another layer to an already frustrating Mets storyline.

Peralta entered the season with significant expectations on a Mets team loaded with star talent and in a contract year. But instead of performing like the two-time All-Star he had been with the Milwaukee Brewers, his struggles became part of the club’s larger problems.

Now, Peralta’s turnaround has prompted questions about whether the issues in Queens were the fault of the Mets organization or due to something else. And former Mets veteran reliever Adam Ottavino offered a pretty harsh explanation.

Ottavino, who spent parts of three seasons with New York, suggested that Peralta’s situation was at least in part caused by his inability to handle big market attention as well as his focus on a new contract.

“I think in Freddy’s case, there’s a lot at play there. Talking free agent year, first year in the big market, doesn’t pitch as well as he wants in that middle part of the year, starts feeling it in a way he’s never felt it before,” Ottavino said during a recent appearance on Foul Territory. “If you’ve never played in a big market like New York, Philly or Boston … and you start to really struggle and you feel it from the fans for the first time in a way you’ve never felt it before, I mean, you’re a human being, that has to affect you on some level.”

Ottavino’s comments suggested that Peralta’s mental toughness was not as strong as it needed to be in order to succeed with the Mets. And he also pointed to some comments from Peralta that suggested his mindset about his career failed him as well.

Ottavino also questioned whether Peralta’s approach to his upcoming free agency played a role in how he handled the Mets environment.

“I think he, in fact, even put out there what his asking price was (for a new contract),” Ottavino added. “That shows that maybe your mind wasn’t in the right spot to handle the New York scenario.”

For Peralta, the Rays’ success with him could provide an opportunity to reset his value heading into free agency. For the Mets, his resurgence represents another reminder of the difficult questions awaiting them this winter.
